The committee has developed following FAQ’s to help clarify our purpose.

FAQ'S FROM THE SALARY COMMITTEE

What is a stepless salary schedule?
A stepless salary schedule is an alternative salary schedule that may provide flexibility and equity to all employee groups.

Why are we looking at a new salary schedule?
In the spring of 2006, three PUSD Governing Board members attended an Arizona School Boards Association conference in Sedona, where they heard a presentation by Bill Maas regarding the Deer Valley Unified School District (DVUSD) stepless salary schedule.

The PUSD Governing Board charged last year’s Classified Salary Schedule Committee to review this model. The committee felt the model had merit.

In May 2007, Bill Maas presented the model to the PUSD Governing Board at a public meeting. At the PUSD Governing Board retreat, the Board asked the administration to explore the DVUSD stepless schedule for possible future implementation in PUSD.

The PUSD Stepless Salary Schedule Committee was asked to make a presentation to the Governing Board, which it anticipates doing in the spring or fall of 2008.

What’s wrong with the current schedule?
This exploration does not imply or suggest anything is wrong with the current salary schedules.

What is the timeline?
We have scheduled the following dates and times for meetings presented by Bill Maas. He will discuss Arizona school finance formulas and their impact on school districts and salaries as well as the basics of a stepless salary schedule. There will be an opportunity to ask questions.

Note: This schedule reflects the same meeting repeated three times.

Who is Bill Maas?
Bill Maas is the architect of the Deer Valley stepless schedule. In Bill’s educational career spanning more than thirty years, he has worked as a custodian, bus driver, high school teacher, football coach, school administrator, Associate Superintendent for Finance for Peoria Unified and Deer Valley Unified. He is the past president of the Arizona School Business Officials ( ASBO) He currently is a board member for the Deer Valley Unified School District  and serves as the interim business manager for the Isaac School District.

How can I learn more about this subject and provide my feedback?
1. Attend the Q&A meetings.

2. We will have the meetings recorded and make a DVD available at every site.

3. Complete the survey, regarding possible implementation, which will be distributed in spring 2008.

4.Contact one of the committee members.

Is it a done deal?
No. Again, this is an exploration. The implementation of a stepless schedule in PUSD is not a “done deal.”
